Amethyst House is a small not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing treatment and supportive services for individuals ages 18 and over struggling with chemical dependency in Bloomington, Indiana.
Operating two ASAM 3.1 sub-acute residential treatment facilities—a men's program serving 17 men and a women's program serving 14 women along with their dependent children up to age 6 on a case-by-case basis—we offer a comprehensive approach that includes residential living in historic homes, where residents secure employment, attend outpatient treatment, build support networks through AA or NA meetings, and receive weekly case management and life skills training.
Our outpatient program provides intensive outpatient treatment, individual, group, and family therapy, assessments, case management, and referral services using evidence-based practices such as Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, following SAMHSA and DMHA guidelines, with small groups of 8-10 participants and a focus on co-occurring disorders, trauma, and family support.
We prioritize admissions for pregnant women and IV drug users, embrace diversity to foster an inclusive environment where everyone is valued regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or identity, and accept various insurances including Medicaid on a sliding fee scale to ensure accessibility for the underserved.
With a committed team of 15 full-time and 14 part-time staff, including licensed addiction and mental health counselors, and a seven-member board of directors, Amethyst House works as a professional yet supportive team to help clients achieve long-term recovery goals, restore relationships, and reintegrate into the community.
What we treat
Treatment & Programs
Levels of Care
Amethyst House provides a structured continuum of care, beginning with their ASAM 3.1 sub-acute residential program and transitioning into full-service outpatient support. Residents participate in intensive outpatient programming while concurrently establishing a sober local lifestyle. Following primary treatment, an open-ended continuing care group helps individuals maintain their recovery momentum over time.
Therapies
Therapeutic interventions are heavily grounded in the Stages of Change Theory and Motivational Interviewing. Clinicians utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help residents reshape negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Additionally, licensed staff bring extensive experience in EMDR and DBT, providing specialized trauma care for those who require a deeper clinical focus.
Addictions
The clinical team at Amethyst House specializes in treating severe chemical dependency and substance use disorders. Recognizing the acute risks facing certain populations, the facility gives preferential admission to intravenous drug users who require immediate intervention. Their evidence-based approach is designed to help individuals break the cycle of long-term addiction and build a sustainable foundation.
Conditions
Addressing the complex relationship between addiction and mental health, this program actively treats co-occurring disorders. Individual counseling sessions are tailored to help clients process trauma, navigate depression, and manage anxiety alongside their recovery journey. By keeping clinical groups small, their licensed counselors ensure each participant receives highly individualized dual diagnosis support.
Issues
Recovery here extends far beyond clinical sessions, placing a heavy reliance on practical life skills and personal responsibility. Weekly case management helps residents navigate pressing life stressors, from securing steady employment to achieving long-term financial stability. Additionally, dedicated staff members assist individuals with navigating the criminal justice system to ensure a smooth and successful reintegration into the community.
Programs
The overarching treatment philosophy integrates heavily with the 12-Step model, requiring residents to actively attend community AA or NA meetings. The structured Intensive Outpatient Program runs for twelve weeks, blending substance abuse education with targeted group therapy. For those requiring a less rigorous approach, a psycho-educational Early Recovery Group offers essential foundational guidance.

Payment
Financing treatment is made highly accessible through a generous sliding fee scale and subsidized funding from the state of Indiana.
