Oxford House - Anew
Oxford House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing self-run, self-supported, and sober living homes for individuals recovering from substance use disorders, fostering an environment of recovery, responsibility, and replication since its founding in 1975. Originating when residents of a closing halfway house in Montgomery County, Maryland, took over the property and established a democratic, drug- and alcohol-free residence, Oxford House has grown to over 3,500 houses across 47 states, housing more than 24,000 residents annually who support one another in maintaining long-term sobriety. The Oxford House Model emphasizes an evidence-based approach where houses are democratically governed by residents who elect officers for six-month terms, share equal expenses, and enforce strict abstinence policies, allowing members to stay as long as needed—often a year or more—without external authority or time limits, promoting self-efficacy, leadership, and responsible living. Tailored to diverse populations including men, women (some with children), veterans, those with co-occurring mental health issues, and specialized groups like LGBTQ+ or deaf individuals, Oxford House integrates with AA/NA participation and has demonstrated unmatched success rates, with studies showing over 80% of residents maintaining sobriety long-term, reduced recidivism, and improved employment outcomes, all while expanding through community support, charters from Oxford House, Inc., and a network of chapters and associations.
