Oxford House - Finn

Oxford House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates a nationwide network of over 3,500 self-run, self-supported recovery homes for individuals in recovery from substance use disorders, providing a community-based, supportive, and sober living environment since its founding in 1975. Originating when a group of men in Montgomery County, Maryland, took over a closing halfway house to continue their recovery democratically, Oxford House, Inc. now issues charters to new houses and offers technical assistance to expand the model, which emphasizes recovery, responsibility, and replication. The Oxford House Model is an evidence-based practice, democratically governed with elected officers serving six-month terms, where residents share equal expenses and responsibilities, interview potential members, and maintain 100% drug- and alcohol-free living by immediately expelling anyone who relapses, allowing members to stay as long as needed without time limits. Backed by extensive research from DePaul University and recognized by SAMHSA, the model achieves high long-term sobriety rates—over 80%—while supporting diverse populations including those with co-occurring mental health disorders, veterans, women with children, and individuals from various backgrounds, fostering leadership, self-efficacy, and reintegration into society through peer support and structured autonomy.
