Oxford House - Kano

Oxford House, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1975 that facilitates a network of over 3,500 self-run, self-supported, and democratically governed sober living homes across the United States for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. The Oxford House Model provides a community-based, supportive, and alcohol- and drug-free living environment where residents share household responsibilities, elect officers for six-month terms, and adhere to strict rules ensuring 100% sobriety, with immediate expulsion for any relapse to protect the group's recovery. Emphasizing long-term recovery without time limits—allowing stays averaging one year or longer—Oxford Houses promote personal responsibility, leadership development, and active participation in programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, while fostering self-efficacy to avoid relapse; this evidence-based approach, supported by extensive research including studies from DePaul University showing significantly lower substance use, higher employment, and reduced incarceration rates compared to usual care, serves diverse populations including those with co-occurring mental health issues, veterans, women with children, and individuals from various backgrounds, enabling hundreds of thousands to achieve comfortable, sustained sobriety through peer support and replication of the model nationwide.
