Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI) is Indiana’s leading mental health and substance use advocacy organization, dedicated to providing overall mental wellness and recovery for all Hoosiers through education, advocacy, policy development, and direct treatment services.
Tracing its roots to the national Mental Health America founded in 1909 by Clifford W.
Beers to combat maltreatment of those with mental illnesses, MHAI's mission is to work for Indiana’s mental health and victory over mental illness by reducing barriers to wellness and fostering partnerships with stakeholders.
As a non-profit, MHAI operates programs like the Life Recovery Center, an outpatient facility accredited by CARF and certified by Indiana’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction, specializing in treating problem gaming, substance use, and mental health issues for adolescents, adults, and families.
Life Recovery Center promotes growth, respect, and integrity by offering comprehensive, evidence-based services including individual, group, family, and telehealth counseling; trauma-informed care; art therapy; peer recovery coaching; and court-ordered interventions such as substance use assessments, anger management, and batterers intervention programs.
Their holistic approach addresses psychological, emotional, social, familial, spiritual, and trauma-related aspects, serving diverse populations including the underserved, justice-involved individuals, and those in recovery, with a focus on long-term sobriety, community reintegration, and equitable access to care through accepted insurances, Medicaid for groups, and programs like Recovery Works.
What we treat
Treatment & Programs
Levels of Care
As an outpatient provider, Mental Health America of Indiana delivers accessible care through both in-office visits and telehealth therapy. Clients engage in comprehensive individual and group sessions while maintaining their daily routines and work schedules in Indianapolis.
Therapies
Treatment draws heavily on trauma-focused modalities, including EMDR and Brainspotting, to help clients deeply process difficult experiences. The team also integrates robust creative outlets like art therapy, and some clinicians even incorporate animal-assisted interventions to create a uniquely comforting clinical space.
Addictions
The clinical team specializes in a wide spectrum of substance use disorders as well as complex behavioral struggles like problem gambling. In fact, their flagship clinic serves as an official enrollment site for the Indiana Voluntary Exclusion Program, supporting individuals ready to tackle severe gambling addiction.
Conditions
Trauma sits at the center of much of the clinical counseling at this center, with clinicians highly experienced in guiding clients through PTSD, depression, and severe anxiety. Staff members also frequently work with individuals managing mood disorders and suicidal ideation alongside complex psychological histories.
Issues
Beyond clinical diagnoses, therapists and peer coaches address heavy life stressors like domestic violence, grief, and housing instability. A dedicated Abuse Intervention Program helps clients navigate anger management, while staff members use their own lived experience to guide clients through family conflict and employment hurdles.
Programs
Mental Health America of Indiana anchors its approach in distinct, evidence-based tracks like the PRIME for Life educational program. They also fiercely advocate for justice-involved individuals through the state-approved Recovery Works initiative, which funds essential clinical treatment for those without insurance.
On-site
Amenities
Because this organization operates strictly as an outpatient clinic, treatment takes place in professional, community-based counseling offices rather than a residential retreat. Clients interact in safe, non-judgmental environments or utilize flexible telehealth platforms to connect with their therapists from home.
Coverage
Payment
Navigating the cost of care is made simpler through wide acceptance of commercial insurance policies and major Indiana Medicaid plans like MDwise and CareSource. While they do not accept Medicare, the clinic actively utilizes specialized funding like the Recovery Works program to ensure uninsured individuals retain access to life-saving treatment.
Please contact the facility directly to verify insurance coverage and payment options. Many facilities offer free insurance verification.
