Oxford House - Pierce
Oxford House, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that oversees a nationwide network of over 3,500 self-run, self-supported recovery homes dedicated to providing community-based, supportive, and sober living environments for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. Founded in 1975 in Silver Spring, Maryland, by residents who took over a closing halfway house, Oxford House embodies a time-tested, evidence-based model that promotes long-term sobriety through democratic self-governance, financial self-sufficiency, and a zero-tolerance policy for drug and alcohol use, with immediate expulsion for any relapse. Residents, who share equal expenses and responsibilities without external management or time limits, benefit from an average stay of about a year or more, fostering leadership, responsibility, and active participation in AA/NA programs. This approach, validated by extensive research from DePaul University and recognized by SAMHSA and the U.S. Surgeon General, serves diverse populations including those with co-occurring mental health issues, veterans, women with children, and formerly incarcerated individuals, achieving unmatched outcomes in reducing substance use, criminal involvement, and improving employment and income stability while enabling replication to meet growing demand.
