Oaklawn is the leading provider of mental health and addiction services in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties, offering compassionate care with uncommon expertise as the state-designated community mental health center. Founded in 1962 and rooted in Mennonite Health Services, accountable to Mennonite Church USA, Mennonite Brethren, and Brethren in Christ churches, Oaklawn has grown over more than 50 years to four campuses and nearly 900 employees, continually adapting to meet community needs and achieving Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic status in 2025. With a mission to support healthy communities and promote health and wholeness, Oaklawn serves children, adolescents, adults, and families through a comprehensive continuum of care, including inpatient psychiatric treatment at Cedars unit, outpatient therapy (group, individual, and family), psychiatric evaluations and medication management, skills training, intensive case management, and specialized programs for first-episode psychosis, youth transitions, the Amish community, and those with co-occurring disorders. Addiction services emphasize recovery journeys with evidence-based approaches like medication-assisted treatment, intensive outpatient programs, opioid response teams, recovery cafes, and peer support from professionals in recovery. Additionally, Oaklawn provides housing options from supervised group living to permanent supportive housing, along with homeless outreach via PATH and City Outreach Team, ensuring accessible, recovery-oriented care for the underserved, including the homeless and those in crisis, across Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.
