Oaklawn is the leading provider of mental health and addiction services in Elkhart and St.
Joseph counties, serving as the state-designated community mental health center with a mission to provide hope and holistic health – including mind, body, and spirit – through compassionate care and uncommon expertise.
Since 1962, Oaklawn has grown from a small organization in Elkhart to four campuses employing nearly 900 professionals, sponsored by Mennonite Health Services Alliance and accountable to Mennonite Church USA, Mennonite Brethren, and Brethren in Christ churches.
Oaklawn offers a full continuum of evidence-based services for children, adolescents, adults, and families, including inpatient psychiatric care, outpatient therapy with a Group First model emphasizing peer support and skills training, psychiatric evaluations and medication management, intensive residential programs, crisis response with 24/7 mobile teams and walk-in centers, addiction treatment including medication-assisted therapy and harm reduction, housing and homeless outreach via the PATH program, specialized services for the Amish community, first episode psychosis through Insight, and transition support for youth via TIP.
Targeting diverse populations such as the underserved, those with co-occurring disorders, and the homeless, Oaklawn employs trauma-informed, culturally competent approaches to foster recovery, community safety, and long-term wellness, partnering with schools, law enforcement, and faith communities to address gaps in behavioral health infrastructure.

Treatment & Programs
Levels of Care
Oaklawn Psychiatric Center - Lakview Drive provides a comprehensive continuum of behavioral health support. This is heavily anchored by Open Access walk-in clinics that allow individuals to begin treatment immediately. Their Goshen campus features the Cedars unit. This space supplies dedicated 24/7 inpatient psychiatric care alongside residential step-down options.
Therapies
Treatment leans heavily on a uniquely branded "Group First" philosophy. This means the majority of clients begin their recovery utilizing evidence-based modalities within a peer-supported environment. Clinicians facilitate sessions integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Emotion Regulation Therapy. They also supplement this clinical work with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) when appropriate.
Addictions
Addiction services at this facility range from traditional outpatient groups to specialized urgent interventions. Operating a dedicated Opioid Response Team across the broader Elkhart region, they provide immediate connections to care. They also oversee targeted outpatient groups for marijuana treatment and broader harm reduction.
Conditions
The clinical staff address a broad spectrum of mental health diagnoses. They view dual diagnosis and co-occurring presentations as deeply interconnected issues. Their designated Insight program offers targeted interventions for individuals navigating their first episode of psychosis. Specialized Illness Management tracks also support those living with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Issues
Recovery here extends deeply into daily community stressors. The center purposefully addresses crises like homelessness and housing insecurity through their active PATH outreach initiatives. Clinicians confront domestic and interpersonal trauma via a dedicated "Beyond Trauma" curriculum. Independent living skills are also fostered for vulnerable youth through a guided transition process.
Programs
A defining specialty of Oaklawn Psychiatric Center - Lakview Drive is their highly specific community tracks. Branded programs like Camp Mariposa provide free weekend interventions for youth impacted by a family member's substance use. Additionally, distinct rural services offer clinically sound, culturally specific residential care led by local Amish staff.
