Porter-Starke Services is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community mental health center dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community through prevention, treatment, education, and research, with a vision of inspiring people to advance the health, balance, and hope of our community.
Celebrating over 50 years of service in Northwest Indiana with offices in Valparaiso, Portage, Knox, La Porte, Gary, and Hebron, we are licensed by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addictions, accredited by CARF, and operate as a Federally Qualified Health Center through Marram Health Center locations.
Our full continuum of care serves adults, families, adolescents, and children facing mental health or substance abuse issues, providing customized individual plans of care that incorporate evidence-based best practices from our Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic model.
Services include compassionate therapy by licensed professionals for temporary challenges, addiction, or chronic illness; comprehensive addiction treatment such as counseling, opiate replacement therapy at the Recovery Center, and supportive housing like the Women's Recovery Home; psychiatric services featuring medication management, care coordination, residential programs, and an Inpatient Care Center for acute needs; and crisis care through a 24/7 Crisis Center, Mobile Crisis Team, and Emergency Services for immediate assessment, stabilization, and support.
As a state-certified provider, we work to make behavioral healthcare accessible and affordable by accepting most major insurances, Medicare, Medicaid, and offering sliding-scale discounts based on income, ensuring compassionate, quality wellness services for all members of our community.
What we treat
Treatment & Programs
Levels of Care
The treatment continuum at this facility encompasses everything from immediate stabilization to ongoing outpatient care. Individuals facing acute psychiatric needs can access the 16-bed Inpatient Care Center for short-term observation, while routine therapy and medication management support long-term recovery in the community. Depending on the severity of the challenge, clients can step down into specialized housing or flexible outpatient programs.
Therapies
Treatment plans here blend clinical counseling with comprehensive medication management to address both the mind and body. Licensed therapists lead specific individual therapy sessions tailored to a client's hurdles, while group therapy offers a supportive peer setting. For those battling opioid dependence, clinicians also utilize structured opiate replacement medications, like methadone and Suboxone, alongside traditional talk therapy.
Addictions
Recognizing the grip of chemical dependency, the clinical team actively treats serious substance use challenges, leading with targeted support for opioid dependence. A dedicated Recovery Center strictly focuses on assisting adults who are reliant on opioids, including heroin, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and morphine. Through structured, medically monitored interventions, clients receive the tools necessary to safely navigate withdrawal and sustain sobriety.
Conditions
Beyond chemical dependency, the facility is deeply equipped to manage chronic mental illness and complex co-occurring disorders. Psychiatric services blend seamlessly with counseling to deliver "whole health" care for mood disturbances, severe behavioral episodes, and the daily impact of enduring psychological distress.
Issues
Recovery often involves navigating the overwhelming routines of daily life and repairing fractured social support systems during times of extreme stress. Case managers and care coordinators guide clients through systemic barriers like severe family conflict, emotional exhaustion, and housing instability that arise alongside mental health crises.
Programs
As a state-certified provider, the organization builds its treatment philosophy around evidence-based models of behavioral healthcare. Distinct specialty tracks include the Women’s Recovery Home, which provides a safe, structured living environment for sustained healing. Additionally, the standalone Recovery Center program focuses exclusively on holistic opiate replacement integrated with behavioral counseling.
On-site
Amenities
While primarily focused on clinical interventions across its Northwest Indiana campuses, the organization ensures a safe and calming environment for all visitors in distress. Practical conveniences, such as access to a full on-site pharmacy, make managing prescriptions and ongoing medication needs seamless for clients engaging in local care.
Coverage
Payment
Ensuring that behavioral healthcare remains both accessible and affordable is a core priority for the financial staff. Counselors work directly with clients to utilize major private networks like Anthem, Aetna, and Cigna, while also welcoming Medicare and Medicaid coverage. For those without insurance, a sliding-scale discount based on income and family size helps eliminate financial barriers to treatment.
