Oaklawn is the leading provider of mental health and addiction services in Elkhart and St.

Joseph counties, offering compassionate care with uncommon expertise as the state-designated community mental health center.

Founded in 1962 and rooted in Mennonite Health Services, accountable to Mennonite Church USA, Mennonite Brethren, and Brethren in Christ churches, Oaklawn has grown over more than 50 years to four campuses and nearly 900 employees, continually adapting to meet community needs and achieving Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic status in 2025.

With a mission to support healthy communities and promote health and wholeness, Oaklawn serves children, adolescents, adults, and families through a comprehensive continuum of care, including inpatient psychiatric treatment at Cedars unit, outpatient therapy (group, individual, and family), psychiatric evaluations and medication management, skills training, intensive case management, and specialized programs for first-episode psychosis, youth transitions, the Amish community, and those with co-occurring disorders.

Addiction services emphasize recovery journeys with evidence-based approaches like medication-assisted treatment, intensive outpatient programs, opioid response teams, recovery cafes, and peer support from professionals in recovery.

Additionally, Oaklawn provides housing options from supervised group living to permanent supportive housing, along with homeless outreach via PATH and City Outreach Team, ensuring accessible, recovery-oriented care for the underserved, including the homeless and those in crisis, across Elkhart and St.

Joseph counties.

Treatment & Programs

Levels of Care

The Mishawaka Campus provides a broad continuum of support, ranging from intensive residential inpatient care to flexible outpatient options. Oaklawn structures its admission process through Open Access walk-in clinics, ensuring clients can connect with the right level of care without waiting weeks for an appointment.

Therapies

Most clients begin their journey within a "Group First" model, blending evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Illness Management Recovery with the power of peer support. For those battling opioid use, the prescribing team closely oversees Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) alongside clinical counseling to reduce cravings.

Addictions

Substance use treatment here targets moderate to severe addictions, with a specialized focus on the ongoing opioid crisis. A dedicated, 24/7 Opioid Response Team connects individuals directly to care, while broader drug and alcohol programs embrace clients who have struggled to find success in traditional rehab settings.

Conditions

Extensive clinical expertise drives the approach to complex behavioral health diagnoses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and trauma. The organization also operates Insight, a specialized recovery-oriented track specifically built for individuals who have experienced their first episode of psychosis within the last five years.

Issues

Beyond direct psychiatric diagnoses, the staff addresses severe real-world stressors like chronic homelessness and justice system involvement. Their dedicated PATH program and City Outreach Teams provide vital wraparound support for unstably housed residents experiencing concurrent emotional regulation issues and substance use challenges.

Programs

Highly distinct specialty tracks set the clinical programming apart, including the Transition to Independence Process (TIP) for youth navigating early adulthood. The organization is also uniquely equipped to serve the local Amish population through culturally specific, Pennsylvania Dutch-language residential programs like Rest Haven.

On-site

Amenities

While primarily a community-focused clinical environment, the Mishawaka Campus maintains an accessible, professional space supported by on-demand Spanish translation services. The broader regional network also hosts welcoming Recovery Cafes that offer individuals a safe, sober place to grab a coffee, engage with peers, and use a computer.

Coverage

Payment

Financial barriers are never a valid reason to delay treatment, as the administration operates on a firm policy of turning no one away due to an inability to pay. The admissions team actively helps uninsured clients navigate a sliding fee scale based on family income, while also assisting with health coverage applications.
