Oxford House - Roundtree

6630 Roundtree Ct, Indianapolis, IN 46214

Oxford House, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing self-run, self-supported sober living homes for individuals recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.

Founded in 1975 when residents of a closing halfway house in Maryland took over the property to create a democratic, peer-governed residence, Oxford House has grown to over 3,500 houses across 47 states, housing more than 24,000 people in recovery at any time.

The Oxford House Model offers a community-based, supportive, and 100% drug- and alcohol-free environment where residents share responsibilities, elect officers for six-month terms, and support each other through participatory democracy, with no time limits on stays as long as sobriety is maintained, expenses are paid, and behavior is non-disruptive.

This evidence-based approach, validated by extensive research from institutions like DePaul University and recognized by SAMHSA, promotes long-term recovery by fostering responsibility, leadership, and self-efficacy, resulting in significantly lower substance use, incarceration rates, and higher employment and income outcomes compared to usual care.

Serving diverse populations including men, women, veterans, those with co-occurring mental health disorders, and women with children, Oxford House emphasizes replication to expand access to affordable, effective recovery housing nationwide, empowering residents to achieve and sustain comfortable sobriety without relapse.

Treatment & Programs

Levels of Care

The community at Oxford House - Roundtree provides a self-supported sober living environment built for long-term recovery. Rather than offering a traditional clinical step-down process, this home allows residents to utilize aftercare support for as long as they need. There are absolutely no arbitrary time limits placed on any stay.

Therapies

The model is entirely non-professional and does not provide clinical therapies. Instead, residents rely entirely on informal peer accountability and are strongly encouraged to actively participate in outside 12-Step meetings.

Addictions

The model requires an absolute, unwavering commitment to abstinence from both alcohol and illicit substances. Any resident who returns to active substance use is immediately expelled to protect the group's safety.

Conditions

The primary focus of this household is supporting individuals trying to overcome a diagnosed substance use disorder. Members lean on one another to achieve healthy habits without the presence of professional medical staff.

Issues

A strong sober social network naturally forms here, helping residents tackle severe life stressors that often accompany early recovery. The community setting helps individuals overcome homelessness and housing insecurity by providing a highly affordable, shared living arrangement. Additionally, communal peer support assists members as they independently navigate job loss or criminal justice issues.

Oxford House - Roundtree operates on a rigorously tested, peer-led recovery community model.
