Adult and Teen Challenge Northern Indiana is a Christ-centered residential recovery program located in Elkhart, IN, serving men 18 and older who are struggling with life-controlling addictions such as substance abuse.
As part of an international ministry founded in 1958 by David Wilkerson, ATCNI has over 60 years of success in guiding individuals toward total life transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word, emphasizing discipleship and evangelism over mere treatment.
Our 12-18 month program (minimum 6 months for re-entry) provides a peaceful, loving environment with a proven Bible-based curriculum that includes structured classes, personal mentoring, prayer, worship, work-ethics training, and involvement in a Christian community to help students confront destructive behaviors, form new mindsets, and establish a restored lifestyle pleasing to God.
We offer holistic services such as residential mentoring, work therapy through initiatives like the ATCNI Detail Center and Rescue Coffee Roasters, non-residential options like Ready Now Recovery, and community outreach including the Stay Sharp prevention program for youth.
ATCNI is birthed by prayer, led by the Holy Spirit, energized by evangelism, and sustained by God’s grace, offering hope and freedom to the hurting and captive, transforming lives from the inside out.

Treatment & Programs
Levels of Care
Adult and Teen Challenge Northern Indiana provides long-term, inpatient residential care designed to foster deep, lasting change. Rather than an acute 30-day stay, the men's program spans 12 to 18 months, allowing ample time to rebuild life skills and spiritual foundations. For those who cannot commit to a residential stay due to work or family obligations, they also offer Ready Now Recovery, a flexible non-residential track.
Therapies
This program firmly believes in transformation over treatment, eschewing traditional clinical therapies in favor of discipleship and spiritual mentoring. Recovery is guided by their Personal and Group Studies for New Life in Christ, a Bible-based curriculum that requires regular prayer, scripture memorization, and structured classes. Work therapy is also a cornerstone of their model, teaching practical work ethics through hands-on labor.
Addictions
The ministry focuses on helping men overcome life-controlling struggles, particularly severe drug addiction and alcoholism. Their approach targets the spiritual and behavioral roots of chemical dependency, addressing both substance abuse and underlying process addictions. Through a combination of faith and structured living, the program helps individuals confront the destructive choices driving their addiction.
Conditions
While they do not provide clinical psychiatric care, Adult and Teen Challenge Northern Indiana addresses the deep hopelessness, despair, and mental anguish that often accompany severe drug and alcohol addiction. Their curriculum is designed to help students overcome the psychological and behavioral impacts of dependency by replacing destructive mindsets with a new sense of purpose and peace.
Issues
Residents often arrive facing devastating life consequences, including chronic homelessness, housing insecurity, and child welfare involvement. By teaching men how to establish a restored lifestyle, the staff helps individuals rebuild fractured family relationships and navigate the practical challenges of re-entering society as dependable fathers and members of their community.
Programs
Every aspect of life at Adult and Teen Challenge Northern Indiana is Christian faith-based and completely abstinence-oriented. The program requires active participation in daily devotions, evening chapel, and spiritual emphasis activities driven by their core religious beliefs. For men nearing the end of their stay, an extended care and step-down phase focuses heavily on community re-entry and sustained spiritual growth.
