Oxford House - Mahalo
3068 E. Fall Creek Pkwy N. Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46205
Oxford House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that pioneered the self-run, self-supported model of sober living homes in 1975, when residents of a closing halfway house in Silver Spring, Maryland, took over the property to continue their recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction.
Founded by Paul Molloy, who drew from his own experiences with addiction and recovery, Oxford House provides community-based, supportive, and drug- and alcohol-free living environments for individuals recovering from substance use disorders, emphasizing principles of recovery, responsibility, and replication.
The Oxford House Model operates through democratically governed residences where members elect officers for six-month terms, share equal expenses (EES), and immediately expel anyone who relapses, fostering long-term sobriety without time limits—allowing residents to stay as long as they remain sober, non-disruptive, and contribute financially.
With over 3,500 houses across 47 states housing more than 24,000 individuals annually, Oxford House serves diverse populations including men, women, veterans, those with co-occurring mental health issues, and families, offering evidence-based support backed by extensive research from DePaul University and recognition by SAMHSA, demonstrating significantly higher sobriety rates (up to 80%), reduced incarceration, and improved employment outcomes compared to traditional aftercare.
Through technical assistance, charters, and a network of chapters and associations, Oxford House, Inc. facilitates expansion, empowering residents to build self-efficacy, leadership, and responsible community living while replicating the model nationwide and internationally.

Treatment & Programs
Levels of Care
Oxford House - Mahalo provides a community-based sober living and aftercare support model tailored for self-directed recovery. Unlike traditional halfway houses, this residence enforces no set time limits. Members can stay as long as they pay their equal share of expenses and remain strictly abstinent.
Therapies
Because the foundation of this setup is self-governed peer support, Oxford House - Mahalo does not employ clinical staff or provide formal therapies. Residents rely entirely on mutual accountability and rigorous democratic processes to maintain their wellness.
Addictions
The home offers a safe harbor entirely dedicated to individuals recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Any return to drinking alcohol or using illicit substances results in immediate expulsion. This absolute rule is highly effective in protecting the sober living environment for all members.
Conditions
Research conducted by DePaul University shows that the structured environment successfully accommodates those overcoming a substance use disorder alongside co-occurring mental health issues. Residents managing dual diagnoses frequently thrive here. They learn to safely navigate their daily lives while building a comfortable, lasting recovery.
Issues
Reintegrating into society frequently brings harsh challenges like housing insecurity, job loss, and criminal justice hurdles. The home addresses these exact stressors by providing a built-in, sober social network. Members actively help one another rebuild responsible habits, secure steady employment, and safely transition back into the community.
Programs
At the core of the house is an uncompromising abstinence-oriented philosophy paired with a peer-led recovery community model. The home runs on disciplined parliamentary procedures without any outside managers. Residents independently vote on everything from accepting new housemates to electing house officers for six-month terms.
On-site
Amenities
This ordinary single-family home features shared bedrooms and communal bathrooms specifically designed to foster connection and prevent isolation. Everyday comforts like cable TV provide casual spaces for relaxation. The entire layout naturally encourages residents to bond while collaborating on shared chores and household maintenance.
Coverage
Payment
Financial responsibility is entirely handled through self-payment via a mandatory Equal Expense Share (EES). Every individual pays the exact same amount on a weekly or monthly basis. This deeply transparent system perfectly covers the total cost of rent, utilities, and all basic staples to keep the house running smoothly.
Please contact the facility directly to verify insurance coverage and payment options. Many facilities offer free insurance verification.
Eligibility
Who We Serve
The peer-run home is uniquely structured to support fiercely dedicated men and women overcoming addiction, while the broader network specifically caters to populations like veterans. Prospective residents are directly interviewed by the current occupants. This egalitarian selection process ensures the Indianapolis home functions as a strongly unified family.
Additional Services
To ensure the most focused peer environment possible, the residency relies on entirely gender-separate housing. Once an individual departs the home in good standing, they are highly encouraged to stay connected through a vibrant national alumni program. This allows former members to offer ongoing friendship and valuable mentorship to newer arrivals.
