Oxford House - Stellis
3824 South Bainbridge Drive, Bloomington, IN 47401
Oxford House is a pioneering 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has provided self-run, self-supported recovery homes for individuals recovering from substance use disorders since 1975.
Founded when residents of a closing halfway house in Silver Spring, Maryland, took over the property to create a democratic, sober living environment, Oxford House has grown into a network of over 3,500 gender-specific residences across 47 states, housing more than 24,000 individuals annually.
The Oxford House Model emphasizes recovery, responsibility, and replication through an evidence-based approach that fosters peer support, leadership development, and long-term sobriety without time limits, external management, or professional oversight—members democratically elect officers, share expenses equally, and immediately expel anyone using drugs or alcohol to maintain a 100% sober environment.
Serving primarily adults in recovery, including veterans, women with children, and those with co-occurring mental health issues, Oxford House promotes active participation in AA/NA while building self-efficacy and community ties, achieving remarkable outcomes such as over 80% long-term sobriety rates as validated by extensive research from institutions like DePaul University and endorsements from SAMHSA.
