Oxford House - Mac

6102 E. 10th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46219

Oxford House is a pioneering nonprofit organization that has provided self-run, self-supported recovery homes for individuals overcoming substance use disorders since 1975.

Founded by Paul Molloy and fellow residents who took over a closing halfway house in Silver Spring, Maryland, Oxford House operates as a 501(c)(3) entity, issuing charters to over 3,500 democratically governed, gender-specific residences across 47 states, housing more than 24,000 people in recovery at any time.

The Oxford House Model emphasizes three core principles—recovery, responsibility, and replication—offering a community-based, supportive, and 100% drug- and alcohol-free living environment where members share equal responsibilities, elect officers for six-month terms, and remain as long as they maintain sobriety, pay their share of expenses, and avoid disruptive behavior.

Backed by extensive research from DePaul University and recognized by SAMHSA as an evidence-based practice, the model achieves remarkable outcomes, with over 80% of residents maintaining long-term sobriety, reduced criminal involvement, and improved employment compared to usual care.

Targeting recovering alcoholics and drug addicts post-rehabilitation or detoxification, including special populations like women with children, veterans, and those with co-occurring disorders, Oxford House fosters self-efficacy, leadership, and peer support without professional management or time limits, enabling residents to rebuild lives while actively participating in AA/NA for sustained recovery.

What we treat

Treatment & Programs

Levels of Care

At Oxford House - Mac, the treatment continuum steps away from clinical management and into peer-led, long-term sober living. As an evidence-based aftercare support environment, residents can stay as long as they need—whether that is a year or several years—provided they remain completely sober and pay their share of expenses. This model serves as a vital bridge between formal rehabilitation and independent living.

Therapies

As a non-professional environment, this residence does not offer clinical therapies or counseling on-site. Instead, the rehabilitative support relies entirely on peer-led accountability, daily lived experience in a sober community, and the expectation that residents actively participate in local AA or NA meetings to maintain their recovery.

Addictions

This Indianapolis residence serves individuals in active recovery from alcohol and severe drug addiction. The overarching model strictly requires a completely drug- and alcohol-free environment at all times. There is a firm, zero-tolerance policy where any resident who returns to using is immediately expelled to protect the sobriety of the group.

Conditions

Oxford House - Mac focuses primarily on supporting individuals overcoming severe substance use disorder. While they do not provide clinical treatment on-site, their democratically run setup is proven to help members manage the everyday realities of maintaining sobriety. Residents are also encouraged to utilize outside professional help for co-occurring mental health conditions when needed.

Issues

Many members enter the home having faced periods of homelessness, job loss, or criminal justice issues tied to their history with addiction. By sharing expenses and engaging in democratic self-governance, residents slowly rebuild a strong sober social network. Slowly but surely, members relearn financial responsibility and develop the self-efficacy required to confidently rebuild their lives.

Programs

Recognized by SAMHSA and backed by extensive research from DePaul University, this model operates as a highly successful evidence-based, peer-led recovery community. The strongly abstinence-oriented and extended care structure is proven to work. In fact, research shows it helps over 80 percent of participating residents maintain long-term sobriety without the intervention of outside management.

On-site

Amenities

Operated like an ordinary single-family home in the Indianapolis community, the residence features shared rooms to discourage isolation and encourage socialization among newcomers. Residents split all daily household responsibilities and chores. This shared effort fosters a structured, egalitarian environment rather than an institutional facility.

Coverage

Payment

To maintain absolute autonomy, the house operates entirely on a self-payment basis where no outside funding dictates the internal rules. Every resident pays the exact same amount—known as an Equal Expense Share (EES)—which routinely covers rent, utilities, and basic staples. This creates an egalitarian financial environment that reinforces personal responsibility and accountability.
