Oxford House - Gratitude Lane
1715 W. Walnut St, Kokomo, IN 46901
Oxford House, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that pioneered the Oxford House Model in 1975, providing self-run, self-supported, and democratically governed sober living homes for individuals recovering from substance use disorders.
Founded when residents of a closing halfway house in Montgomery County, Maryland, took over the property to continue their recovery, Oxford House emphasizes recovery, responsibility, and replication through a network of over 3,500 gender-specific residences across the United States and internationally, housing more than 24,000 individuals at any time.
The model fosters long-term sobriety by offering a supportive, drug- and alcohol-free environment where members share responsibilities, pay equal expenses, and elect officers for six-month terms, with no time limits on stays as long as residents remain sober, non-disruptive, and contribute financially.
Drawing on principles of self-help, disciplined democracy, and financial self-sufficiency, Oxford Houses encourage active participation in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous while remaining organizationally independent, serving diverse populations including those with co-occurring mental illnesses, veterans, women with children, and formerly incarcerated individuals, backed by extensive research showing sobriety rates exceeding 80% and reduced recidivism.
What we treat
Treatment & Programs
Levels of Care
Oxford House - Gratitude Lane operates entirely as a sober living environment based on the time-tested Oxford House Model. Rather than functioning as a traditional step-down program with a set end date, residents can stay as long as they need—averaging around a year—provided they remain completely sober, contribute to household expenses, and participate in democratic house governance.
Therapies
Gratitude Lane intentionally operates without clinical staff or formal therapies, adhering to the organization's tradition of remaining forever non-professional. Instead, the house relies heavily on the principles of mutual self-help and strongly encourages active daily participation in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous to ensure long-term, comfortable sobriety.
Addictions
The home provides a safe, supportive haven for individuals recovering from both drug addiction and alcoholism. To protect the recovery of everyone in the home, the facility maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy; any member who returns to drinking alcohol or using illicit drugs is immediately expelled by a democratic vote.
Conditions
While primarily focused on substance use disorder, the peer-supported environment also successfully accommodates individuals with co-occurring mental illnesses. Extensive research conducted on the Oxford House model demonstrates that residents managing moderate to severe psychiatric conditions can thrive here, learning to balance their recovery and medications within a structured, empathetic peer community.
Issues
The supportive framework helps residents rebuild their lives after facing the devastating consequences of addiction, including job loss, housing insecurity, and family alienation. For the roughly 78 percent of Oxford House members nationwide who have previously served jail time, the strong sober social network and shared community responsibilities actively help reduce recidivism and support legal transitions.
Programs
The guiding program at Gratitude Lane is a completely peer-led, abstinence-oriented recovery community. The house relies on a unique system of participatory democracy where house officers are elected for six-month terms to prevent "bossism" and ensure every single resident has an equal vote in how the home operates.
On-site
Amenities
Designed to operate just like an ordinary family residence, this single-family home features four or more bedrooms and two shared bathrooms to comfortably accommodate the group. Residents typically sleep in shared rooms—a deliberate design choice meant to discourage isolation and encourage sober socialization—while enjoying access to standard comforts like cable TV and sharing daily housekeeping duties.
Coverage
Payment
Oxford House - Gratitude Lane is strictly self-supporting, meaning the house relies entirely on self-payment through an Equal Expense Share (EES) system. Members split the total cost of rent, utilities, and basic staples evenly, which typically ranges from $125 to $250 a week, making long-term sobriety highly accessible without the need for insurance billing.
