Oxford House - Cozy Court

422 Perrin Ave, Lafayette, IN 47904

Oxford House, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that facilitates a network of over 3,500 self-run, self-supported recovery homes across the United States and internationally, providing community-based, supportive, and sober living environments for individuals recovering from substance use disorders.

Founded in 1975 when residents of a closing halfway house in Silver Spring, Maryland, took over the property to continue their recovery democratically, Oxford House embodies the principles of Recovery, Responsibility, and Replication.

The Oxford House Model is an evidence-based practice that operates without house managers or external authority, where residents elect officers for six-month terms, share equal expenses, and maintain 100% drug and alcohol-free living through immediate expulsion for relapses.

Residents can stay as long as needed—averaging about a year but often longer—while developing leadership skills, self-efficacy, and long-term sobriety, with studies showing over 80% success rates in maintaining recovery, reducing criminal involvement, and improving employment outcomes compared to usual care.

Targeting recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, including those with co-occurring mental illnesses, veterans, women with children, and special populations, Oxford Houses foster peer support, active participation in AA/NA, and responsible community living to help members rebuild lives free from addiction.

Treatment & Programs

Levels of Care

As a sober living environment, Oxford House - Cozy Court offers a long-term housing solution entirely without a set deadline. Residents can stay as long as they need—averaging about a year, though many stay longer. This step-down model provides individuals with the vital time and structure required to comfortably transition back into independent independence.

Therapies

In strict alignment with the organization's core traditions, the house remains entirely non-professional, meaning there are no clinical therapies, doctors, or psychiatrists on staff. Instead, members rely on participatory democracy, mutual peer support, and highly encouraged daily participation in local AA or NA meetings.

Addictions

This residence is strictly dedicated to helping individuals recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Operating on an absolute requirement of zero tolerance, any member who returns to using alcohol or illicit drugs is immediately expelled. This firm boundary ensures the household remains a completely abstinence-oriented haven for everyone committed to staying clean.

Conditions

While primary substance use disorders are the main focus, the peer-led framework successfully supports individuals managing co-occurring mental illnesses as well. Residents learn to maintain their daily responsibilities, carefully adhere to their prescribed medication routines, and establish the stability necessary for lasting mental health and sobriety.

Issues

Recovery here addresses the practical life challenges that often accompany addiction, such as chronic loneliness, immediate housing insecurity, and criminal justice issues. By building a strong, sober social network, residents relearn healthy socialization and accountability, which drastically reduces the chances of unemployment or continuous recycling through the jail system.

Programs

The core program relies on democratic self-government rather than relying on external authority. Without a house manager, residents of Oxford House - Cozy Court elect their own officers for six-month terms and follow disciplined parliamentary procedures, creating a peer-led, evidence-based environment that strongly promotes personal responsibility.

On-site

Amenities

Located in an ordinary residential neighborhood, Oxford House - Cozy Court functions as a typical single-family home. To prevent the isolation often associated with relapse, members usually share bedrooms equipped with twin beds, while also sharing access to common living areas, cable television, and daily household chore responsibilities.

Coverage

Payment

The financial structure requires the home to be completely self-supporting through resident self-payment. Every member contributes an Equal Expense Share (EES), which divides the monthly rent, utilities, and basic household staples completely evenly among the group, making communal recovery housing an affordable reality.
