Oxford House - Francisco
4305 N. College Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46205
Oxford House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1975 that provides self-run, self-supported, and substance-free recovery housing for individuals recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.
Originating from a group of residents who took over a closing halfway house in Silver Spring, Maryland, to continue their recovery, Oxford House has grown to over 3,500 democratically governed homes across 47 states and internationally, housing more than 24,000 residents annually.
The Oxford House Model emphasizes recovery, responsibility, and replication through a unique, evidence-based system that fosters long-term sobriety without time limits, professional management, or outside authority; residents elect officers for six-month terms, share equal expenses, and maintain a 100% drug- and alcohol-free environment by immediately expelling any member who relapses.
This community-based approach, supported by chapters, state associations, and Oxford House, Inc.'s technical assistance, enables residents—many with histories of homelessness, incarceration, or co-occurring mental health issues, including veterans and women with children—to develop leadership skills, self-efficacy, and responsible behavior while actively participating in AA/NA for sustained recovery.
Research, including studies by DePaul University and endorsements from SAMHSA, demonstrates unmatched outcomes: residents achieve significantly lower substance use (31% vs. 65%), higher employment and income, and reduced incarceration rates compared to usual care, proving the model's effectiveness in saving lives, instilling hope, and restoring relationships.
