Hamilton Center, Inc., is a not-for-profit regional behavioral health system serving central and west central Indiana since 1971, originally founded as the Katherine Hamilton Mental Health Center to address the lack of community-based mental health facilities.

Named in honor of advocate Katherine Hamilton, who sought improved care after experiencing the limitations of institutionalized treatment for her sister, the organization has grown from a single outpatient office in Terre Haute to over 21 locations across 11 counties, providing a comprehensive continuum of individualized, trauma-informed, and evidence-based services including behavioral health counseling for adults, children, and adolescents; addictions treatment through programs like WIN Recovery for opioid use disorder with medication-assisted therapies such as methadone; primary care via Grace Clinic Health Professional for underserved populations; crisis diversion and mobile response units; family preservation through Wraparound and Healthy Families programs; employment services; and specialized support for military veterans, new citizens post-incarceration, and community training like Mental Health First Aid.

With a mission to provide quality behavioral healthcare, wellness, and human development services, Hamilton Center emphasizes least restrictive, community-based care focused on restoring hope, enhancing quality of life, and promoting recovery for vulnerable individuals and families facing issues from stress and anxiety to severe mental illnesses and substance use disorders, serving over 13,000 clients annually with compassion, innovation, and a commitment to integrated whole-person wellness.

What we treat

Treatment & Programs

Levels of Care

The treatment continuum includes a state-licensed 16-bed inpatient unit for short-term, acute stabilization of behavioral and addiction disorders. Beyond structured inpatient care, patients can transition into residential group homes, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) utilizing the Matrix Model, or straightforward outpatient counseling. Clients also have access to dedicated telehealth services, allowing for flexible engagement across central Indiana.

Therapies

Counselors rely heavily on evidence-based modalities, frequently utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). For clients recovering from severe psychological trauma, clinicians may employ Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) alongside cognitive processing techniques. Medication-Assisted Treatment is also central to their framework, utilizing methadone to stabilize individuals enduring opioid cravings.

Addictions

WIN Recovery, a specialized clinic operated by the organization, focuses intensively on opioid use disorder, treating heroin and prescription painkiller dependency. Aside from prioritizing intravenous drug users and pregnant women struggling with addiction, they also provide DMHA-certified counseling for gambling addiction and comprehensive outpatient options for alcohol dependency.

Conditions

The clinical team routinely addresses severe mental illnesses alongside standard behavioral health challenges. Treatment plans target co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), severe depression, and bipolar disorder, ensuring a holistic approach to complex dual diagnoses. Child and adolescent providers focus heavily on early intervention for ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders.

Issues

Care managers assist clients in overcoming significant life barriers, addressing homelessness, severe caregiver stress, and involvement in the criminal justice system. The organization places a strong emphasis on family preservation, working closely with child welfare agencies through home-based Wraparound interventions to resolve deeply rooted family conflict.

Programs

Hamilton Center operates Grace Clinic Health Professional, a specific program that seamlessly integrates primary medical care with behavioral therapy for a whole-person approach. Distinct specialty tracks include the Military Veteran Program (MVP) for service members facing reintegration challenges and the trauma-informed Matrix Model for addiction recovery.
